ball of weight 50 N is suspended vertically by a string 50 cm long. Find the
magnitude and direction of the least force, which can hold the ball 10 cm above
the lowest position as shown in Fig.1. Also find the tension in the string at

Q.7 a. Explain the concept of kinetic energy of
rotation (5)
b. The block
shown in Fig.5 has a mass of 6 kg. It is attached to a cord which is wrapped around the periphery of a 20
kg. disk that has a moment of inertia IA = 0.40 kg-m2. If
the block is initially moving downward with a speed of 2 m/sec, determine its
speed in 3 secs. Neglect the mass of the cord. (11)

Q.9 a. A
solid circular shaft of 3 m length and 200 mm diameter is subjected to torque
of 100 kN-m. Find the relative rotation between the end cross section of the
shaft. Take G =1 x 105 N/mm2. (8)
b. A wooden tie is 60 mm wide, 120 mm deep and 1.5 m long. It
is subjected to an axial pull of 30 kN. The stretch of the member is found to
be 0.625 mm. Determine Young’s modulus of the tie material. (8)
