Q.3 Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow in your own words:
Groundwater in Delhi is polluted at many places. In many areas, oily brown water comes out of the tap. Groundwater pollution is a serious concern. Most of the pollution is from the landfills where toxic garbage, industrial effluents and waste have been carelessly dumped, leading to leaching into the underground aquifers during the rainy season.
In Delhi, thousands of tonnes of domestic and industrial waste are produced everyday. Most of the garbage dumps are spilling over with hazardous and toxic wastes like batteries, corrosive chemicals and metals. It is illegal to dump hazardous garbage in the landfills site, but there is no control over it. The face of the new garbage that is hitting us in the electronic age is E-waste.
Every year worldwide, nearly 60 million tonnes of outdated computers are being replaced by more efficient, faster models. The old ones are simply junked. Delhi is no exception. Here, most of the useable parts are cannibalized, recycled and segregated by the scrap dealers. The rest tragically ends in the landfills in different parts of the city. Most of the components contain harmful and highly toxic substances. The hazard is multiplied due to improper recycling and disposal methods. The waste contains a large part of heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury and lead which causes damage to our environment.
The heavy metals from the damaged and broken components leach into the ground, and finally, into the groundwater. Burning motherboards and PVC wiring also release heavy amount of concentrated dioxin, saturating the residential areas around the dumps, with carcinogenic toxins.
